US Urges Fair Legal Process Following Kejriwal’s Arrest

The United States has underscored its close attention to the recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a fair and transparent legal process, as reported by Reuters. A spokesperson from the State Department conveyed the nation’s stance, calling for adherence to principles of justice in light of the ongoing developments surrounding Kejriwal’s case.

In response to queries regarding the arrest of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor, the U.S. spokesperson reiterated the call for a legal process characterized by fairness, transparency, and timeliness. Kejriwal’s detention by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, following his implication in a chargesheet related to alleged irregularities in Delhi’s erstwhile excise policy, has drawn significant international attention.

The ED has alleged that individuals connected with Kejriwal were instrumental in shaping the excise policy, leading to purportedly illicit gains, which they allegedly reciprocated with kickbacks to the AAP. The unfolding legal proceedings have sparked discussions not only within India but also abroad, with various governments expressing their expectations for due process and judicial independence.

Commenting on Kejriwal’s arrest, a spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry highlighted the importance of upholding democratic principles and the presumption of innocence. The statement emphasized the need for a fair and impartial trial, underscoring Kejriwal’s entitlement to utilize legal avenues without constraint.

However, India swiftly responded to the German Foreign Ministry’s remarks, expressing strong protest over perceived interference in its internal affairs. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conveyed its discontent, labeling such statements as undermining the independence of the Indian judiciary.

When questioned about India’s protest to Germany, the State Department spokesperson redirected inquiries to the German Foreign Ministry for further clarification on their discussions with the Indian government. The unfolding diplomatic exchange underscores the international ramifications of Kejriwal’s arrest and the broader implications for India’s legal and political landscape.
